"Distant Visions"
“Continuing exploration of figurative sculpture carved from basswood. Primarily freestanding pieces which evoke unspoken narratives. Many figures wear masks, and several exhibit the quiet holding of birds or animals. They are forest figures who appear ready for rituals. The viewer becomes storyteller.
Scenarios include: Elephants who sleep, dream, and vanish. Rabbits, always on the alert. Mythical monkeys, and a giant frog about to speak in a minimalist interior.
Drawing as a preliminary to carving has developed into a more immediate reinstatement of dreams and passing vision. Mixed media on Canson color paper. These drawings now stand alone without the need to be sculpted.
A collaborative film with Leif Peterson, Portland independent filmmaker, will be screened throughout the exhibit. “The Sleeping Giant” is a short subject utilizing Stan’s sculptures as props for live actors in a dreamlike scenario.
“The Elephant in the Studio”, a book published through Blurb..com will also be presented as a survey of the working process behind many of the sculptures in this exhibit at beppu wiarda gallery. “ Stan Peterson 2010
