AUGUST 2009 - Mel McCuddinMel McCuddin's work has evolved though the years from abstract expressionist to his current style, which could be described as figurative expressionist. His ultimate objective is to make paintings related to the human experience.<br /><br /> “Looking at a McCuddin(painting) is never salacious or bawdy, but always dreamlike, eerie and delicate. Grays, browns and blues are always muted, with only yellow and orange making the occasional bright-color cameo. Patterns, stripes or random stippling, charge the mood of the paintings from dark to absurd. Creating something like lithium-induced euphoria or caffeine-triggered sleep, his paintings are often more silly that macabre, as if McCuddin had driven you down a dark country road and then had a clown jump out of the bushes.” Leah Sottile, "Inlander" <br /><br />“My goal for many years has been to do paintings that have a strong presence or a life of their own, something that is more akin to feeling than to visual experience.” Mel McCuddin<br /><br />McCuddin was born and raised in and around Spokane, Washington. He currently lives and works in Millwood, Washington where he finds inspiration for his wild and thought-provoking paintings. His work has received international recognition and has been in invitational shows in the United States, Pago Pago, Samoa and Japan.
