MAY 2009 - Jim Hibbard, Stephen Leflar, Andy LarkinLinear Force/Sinuous Forms – Jim Hibbard, Andy Larkin and Stephen Leflar<br /><br /> Jim Hibbard, Professor Emeritus from Portland State University, will show his latest works produced in his Piramidal Gráfica printmaking studio/gallery/teaching institution and artist‘s residence. He established this printmaking studio in 2003 with his wife, Jenny, in Guanajuato, Mexico. Jim selected two Portland artists, Andy Larkin and Stephen Leflar, to show with him in beppu wiarda gallery for the month of May.<br /><br /> Stephen Leflar’s consummate drawings reflect his interest in Rembrandt's graphic work. Leflar's drawings have a Baroque linear force with elements of German expressionism in them. His forceful use of line evokes mass and volume. The contours evoke an environment without resorting to architectural or other spatial props.<br /><br /> Andy Larkin's sinuous forms have been influenced for years by Near East and Indian miniature painting. Surface textures and the use of pattern in his work suggest the material aspect of forms. Irony and wit permeate his paintings and drawings.<br /><br /> Andrew currently teaches drawing and the history of ancient art at the Art Institute of Portland, and before returning to the faculty in 2006, was head of its Media Arts and Animation program for several years. He has worked as a production animator at Digital Artworks in Eugene, and taught a variety of traditional art media at various colleges and universities in the Pacific Northwest. He has traveled widely, and has lived abroad for extended periods, studying the artistic and philosophical traditions of India and ancient Mexico.<br /><br /> Jim Hibbard's monotypes occupy a place between drawing and painting. They reflect the colors and textures of Mexico's walls. The glyph forms are derived from Aztec writing. They are cut from stencils which are placed on inked sheets of plexiglass or tracing paper and printed on a lithographic press.
