FEB 2009 - Judy Vogland and Taylor Vogland Dreiling, "Gathering of Place"Gathering of Place is a collection of two generations of makers—of family. A mother and daughter whose memories sometimes overlap and sometimes don’t; whose roads split and then familiarly collide. It is an assemblage of both memories and future narratives often built together but sometimes lived apart. In their own artistic practices, both makers consider where they have been and where they are going.<br /><br /> We often see our lives in moments—flashes of memory that shift and change with the passage of time. Judy Vogland creates objects that serve more as brief but powerful hints of memory—blurred and distant from the passage of time but sprinkled with an intimate familiarity. It is the confident trace of lives lived with the suggestion of those to come. Taylor Vogland Dreiling’s sculptures embody the act of building a space for oneself or understanding the space one is in, manifested through the diligent act of creating forms. They are the remnants of a mature hand that is just beginning to craft a life for oneself.<br /><br /> Gathering of Place is the meeting of these flickering moments of personal history coupled with the lingering hopes of future fictions—the dreams of memories meant to be lived and new stories yet to be written. It is a story of a mother looking back who is thoughtfully stepping into her new role as matriarch and a daughter ambitiously looking forward and emerging into herself. Here they also gather together as peers, as makers.
