OCTOBER 2008 - Stan BeppuSOLASTALGIE. “In each of these works I have been exploring the collision of colors and textures exposed through the environmental consequences of human excesses and the impact of global warming incidents on the human psyche. A circle of circumstances or “Solastalgie,“ the newly coined word by environmental philosopher, Glen Albrecht. “Solastalgie . \sō-lä-stál-je \ N.: A pain or discomfort caused by the present state of one’s home environment…a compilation of solace, desolation and nostalgia…to describe the inability to derive comfort from one’s home environment due to negative environmental changes.” From the melted ice/water incident in Greenland, to Monsanto’s seed wars/patent disputes, to the freaky weather patterns emerging, and the inadequate responses of global leaders faced with new challenges for the world environment have all haunted my dreams and influenced my works. Gathering from friends late night discussions, world leaders fumbled speeches, blogged accounts of disasters, mass media hysteria, letters of questions from scientist, books that explore with no answers, and videos of astounding and profound images all of which have sparked in my work, new perceptions on the patterns of change.” Stan Beppu Stan has produced large painted canvasses, monotypes, and paper collages with bold & urgent brush strokes, vibrant color fields, iridescent layers, sharp edged abysses and obscure recesses reflecting his response to the present political and natural environment. Disturbing and exquisite, these works present to the viewer his personal perspective on global change, environment, color, movement and pattern.
