JULY 2008 - Yuji Hiratsuka
"New Faces, New Bodies" is a recent series of color intaglio prints by Oregon artist Yuji Hiratsuka.
"In these prints I’ve been pursuing figure forms which wear distinctive
outfits. The figures are the result of the interplay of visual effects
achieved through the combination of frugal medieval engravings, lavish
Victorian vogues and contemporary cross-play fashions which bear a slight
resemblance to traditional Japanese Ukiyo-e styles.”
Yuji Hiratsuka was born in Osaka, Japan, and moved to the United States in 1985. Since 1992 he has been teaching printmaking at Oregon State University. His graphic work has been exhibited in the Americas, Europe and Asia and has received numerous awards in national and international competitions. His work is in many public collections, including The British Museum, Tokyo Central Museum, New York Public Library, and the Portland Art Museum.
