“Wanderings: New Sculpture On and Off the Wall”
A world view carved out of wood and painted to approximate an internal reality. This meandering sojourn by Stan Peterson was first exhibited in Portland by William Jamison in 1982. “Carved and Painted Figures in Small Worlds” was the title. Now, 26 years later, Stan continues his musing with new views on the wall and free-standing figurative sculptures which have a quiet authority.
His art reflects travels far beyond his original mail carrier routes. When whittling on his Postal lunch breaks, he favored dogs, yards, and silent streets. This new show opening May 1, 2008 at beppu wiarda gallery has both the exotic (elephants floating in painted boats) and the slightly askew familiar (a cat waiting for a winged dinner).
Rabbits have also multiplied in his sculpted world. They bear witness to animal wisdom with exaggerated long ears and almost human inquisitiveness.
Stan pays tribute to the art of the short story and the craft of untrained artists worldwide. He teaches woodworking and drawing at Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, California. He has recently been an Artist in Residence at the Mendocino Art Center where he worked on several of the pieces in this show.
