APRIL 2008 - Marlana Stoddard-HayesMarlana Stoddard-Hayes, M.A., M.F.A., has been actively painting for over 30 years. Originally from a small town in Iowa, she entered the foundations program at Kansas City Art Institute in lieu of her senior year of high school and fell in love with the relationship of artistic process, the natural world and philosophy. “This bond has continuously informed my work and lead into exploring the spiritual aspects of making imagery and why images have such deep meaning for us as created beings. In this newest body of work "Amend," a circlet of prayer beads enters the picture space and negotiates between the known and unknown in an attempt to find healing in the world. By exploring a range of visual constructions… (landscape, still life and abstraction) the oil membrane seeks to illustrate the cross connections between these image forms and encourages a pattern of symbols to emerge over time by the engagement. Many of the symbols are not premeditated and arise spontaneously through the material and by chance.” Marlana has continuously made work since her childhood and has formed an entire life around the process. The paintings reflect that commitment and have an intrinsic depth that is the opposite of speed. Her work has been supported in part by grants from the Kansas Arts Commission (1983-2000) the NEA, and the Neskowin Coast Foundation, 1990. She is in many collections including Spencer Museum of Art, Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, University of Iowa, Kansas Art Commission, Kansas Health Foundation, Portland Community College. Invited lectures include the University of Michigan, Minnesota State University, Pacific University and over 100 lectures for rural arts organizations. Recently she was invited to serve as a member of the Alumni Advisory Committee for the new Colorado State University Art Museum in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Her work is collected worldwide.
