“This artwork begins as homage to its source media. All of the wood used in the carvings is naturally felled… I come from a long tradition of Norwegian fisherman and boat builders. The chisels I use have been passed from my grandfather to my father to me. The craftsmanship of my work speaks to the universality and the timelessness of carving. “ Steve Jensen
In this new series of carvings Steve again explores his connection with the sea. But this time he goes under the surface and examines the tangles of massive ocean kelp by using deep cuts in the wood to articulate the intricate patterns of water flowing through the sea grasses, then within the finishing oils defines the outer edges of the plant life. The imagery is rich and organic.
His Böt painting series “reflect…a compassionate duality of individual pieces and cultural references that remind the viewer that the one thing we all share is the final voyage. In these peaceful works, richly-colored half-moon forms perch on a surface in the foreground, like a piece of fruit arranged in a still life. The background colors increase and fade in varying degrees, giving each boat a halo-like glow. The light could be the approach of death but…it signifies a journey rather than an end.”
