JANUARY 2008 - Mel McCuddinJoin us for the opening reception Thursday, January 3rd from 6 to 8 pm. Mel will be in the gallery to answer questions about the social commentary and inspiration for his work. “I like to apply a whole bunch of paint to the canvas….no preliminary drawing or outline or even a preconceived idea of where the painting is going…Then I sit back and look at it all, sometimes for a long time, to see what it suggests. I focus in and sometimes I am kind of tired and dozing in my chair when it comes to me. I look at the darks and lights, the colors and shapes, but initially I don’t see a whole image. Maybe it’s an elbow or an eye and I’ll visualize from there. Sometimes it all changes as I go along. “ From his “Socially Disadvantaged” Skunk-Carrying Loner to a huge portrait of "Little Tyrant,” Mel brings to the canvas a rich, humorous and sometimes thought-provoking gallery of players. Living in the wilds of eastern Washington Mel finds inspiration in the animals and people that grace the region. He tells their stories and captures their character in his large and bold canvases.
