Oregon Public Broadcasting, TV channel 10 in Portland LORNA NAKELL AWARDED RESIDENCY "The Artist in Residence program (AIR) selects twelve artists to live and work at Weir Farm each year. To date, 115 artists from throughout the U.S., as well as Tunisia, Germany, Australia, India and The Netherlands have participated in the AIR program."
CONGRATULATIONS TO JUDY VOGLAND Congratulations to Judy Vogland, whose major work, “The Watermelon Eaters,” was accepted in the permanent collection of Northwest Art at the Portland Art Museum. In addition, Judy will be teaching four upcoming workshops: “Personal History Collage,” Feb 16-17, 2008 at Oregon College of Art and Craft, Portland, and “Mud and Crud,” June 25-29, 2008. Stoddard-Hayes Honored by University of Michigan Marlana Stoddard-Hayes was invited to be the Visiting Resident Artist for April 2007 at the University of Michigan. In addition, an exhibition will be featured for the month and a lecture will be given by Marlana. Stan Peterson Activities In the late summer of 2006, Stan Peterson received a personal fellowship grant to study the woodcarving traditions of northern New Mexico. His research centered around the Santos carvers who exhibit at the annual Spanish Market in Santa Fe. When visiting the Wine Country in Northern California be sure to see “Creatures of Magic and Myth” at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, January 13 – February 25, 2007. This invitational exhibit was curated by Virginia Breier. The Spokane Art School (Washington) will present Stan’s sculptures in a 2 person show of narrative art during February 2007. During the month of February, Stan will be an Artist in Residence at the Mendocino Art Center. The wood carvings created during this time on the Northern California coast will be exhibited in his next show at beppu wiarda gallery.
ARVIE SMITH MUSEUM EXHIBITION Arvie is preparing for his year-long exhibition at The Lewis Museum of African American History and Culture and The Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore, Maryland. The exhibition, beginning February 2007, asks the audience to consider what it meant to be “free” in the early United States and what it means to be “free” today.
JIM HIBBARD INCLUDED IN MUSEUM COLLECTIONS Hallie Ford Museum, Salem, Oregon, and The Gilkey Center for Graphic Arts, Portland Art Museum, Portland, Oregon, have each included an original ink and watercolor drawing by Jim Hibbard to their collections.
Shannon Richardson featured in Southwest Art Magazine The September 2006 issue of Southwest Art Magazine will feature gallery artist Shannon Richardson in the article "21 to 31", a special look at 20 artists in the nation between the ages of 21 and 31 who are creating exceptional work and being noticed in the contemporary art world.
Rainy Lehrman accepted to Pratt Institute Rainy Lehrman will be attending Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, this fall to complete her Masters Degree in sculpture. Related Website: http://www.pratt.edu
Marlana Stoddard Hayes and Deborah Gillis show in Mali, Africa Deborah Gillis and Marlana Stoddard Hayes are included in a three-year exhibition which will be shown in the Ambassador’s Residence in Bamako, Mali. Ambassador Terence P. McCulley selected the works as part of the State Department’s ART in Embassies program, where artwork by US artists is sent on loan to Embassies throughout the world. The purpose of this exhibition is to help Malians understand and appreciate US history and culture.
