The Northwest continues experiencing a vast renaissance of change, effected dually by both natural shifts and urban gentrification. Great lakes, valleys, desert and mountains delicately balance between empty buildings, alleys, vacant parking lots, train and shipyards. The terrain evolves with my every step, and much about it remains random. In the process I’ve inadvertently produced a document of sorts, one that redefines the abstractions of aging architecture and its environs, the detritus of a former glory peaking through industrial cracks and weatheredness. The human hand and Mother Nature play tug-of-war. These pictures are virtually patterned in real then digitally recomposed just slightly, like a musical score. Unique relationships, between the organic and the fabricated emerge and subtly map an intersection between the experiential and the concrete. When images are paired and viewed through a broad filter certain assumptions about public vs. private space are re-contextualized. In this search my new work takes a step back, using its own ‘code’ to compose the intangible, or perhaps infer a conceptual narrative.
